FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Am I The Right Trainer For You?  Are You The Right Client For Me?

It will be important that we are able to work together to insure the success of your dog.   You will need to be familiar with the tools I use.  Everyone in the family will need to be on board with the training.  If everyone is not consistent, your dog will get mixed signals.

At Sunka K9 Training, we are not just teaching obedience, we are creating a communication pathway between you and your dog.  This greatly helps your dog understand how to respond to his environment, and help create a calm, confident dog and family.

What Will My Dogs Day Be Like?  How Long Will He Be Crated?

Your dog will start each day with the Structured Walk.  A lot of dogs that come to Sunka K9 Training have issues with the walk, so we train all dogs how to properly walk with their owners.

After the Structured Walk your dog will need a little down time to think about what he just learned.  After a break, your dog will have several short sessions with breaks in between.  Your dog will learn best if his training sessions are short, but happens several times a day.  Your dog’s training sessions will be outside, weather permitting,  supervised, and will also train in public places.

Your dogs time in the crate will be for rest periods between training sessions.

What Tools Do You Use?

At Sunka K9 Training we use many tools.  We use flat buckle collars, basic slip leads, prong collars, harnesses, bark collars, E-collars and much more.  All these tools are rarely used on one dog.  We customize our tools to fit the needs of your individual dog.

We have several videos throughout our Website & YouTube that show these tools in use and how gently these tools are used.

Should E-Collars Be Used With My Fearful / Nervous Dog?

With modern technology, we are fortunate enough to let the old shock collars of yesterday fade away.  We use modern E-Collars that are advanced to deliver low stimulus that feels similar to leash pressure.  These new collars allow us to talk softly or loudly to our dogs.

Fearful or nervous dog benefit greatly from the E-Collar training, letting them know that we are advocating for them, even when off leash, thus creating a more confident dog.

Should E-Collars Be Used With Puppies & Small Dogs?

The E-Collar for small dogs & puppies are actually more comfortable than other collars due to the size difference between us, and us & them pulling on the leash.

The modern E-Collars are designed to make training easier on your small dog or puppy’s neck, meaning no damage to their trachea that other collars can cause due to pulling.

Do You Use Treats During Training?

If your dog is food motivated, we like to start his training with his daily food as a reward.  We do not want your dog to learn to only work for food, so we gradually ween your dog from his food as rewards.

We want a dog that learns to communicate with his owner, not just for food or treats.

My Dog Is Terrible When I Take Him On Walks.  He Lunges, Barks and Pulls.  Can You Fix This?

This is why your dog is taken on a Structured Walk everyday.  We will correct any unwanted behaviors that occur on the walk.  This includes lunging, barking, pulling, refusing to walk, etc.  You dog will learn to automatically sit when stopping and learn to be calm by your side.

Will My Dog Miss Me While He Is At The Board & Train?

Your dog will be busy learning a new lifestyle.  There will be many new things your dog will be doing.  We will keep his mind busy on other things to be thinking about.

I’ve Tried Other Trainers.  What Makes Your Training Programs Different?

At Sunka K9 Training we believe in creating a communication path with your dog.  We do not just teach obedience.  Through obedience and communication techniques, that are designed for each dog individually, we find the best way to teach your dog how to understand what is expected and what is not wanted with his behavior.  Through these techniques, we help you & your dog build the communication bridge that will create a peaceful and confident lifestyle, and the both of you will be able to enjoy a life together at home and in public.

Why Don’t You Teach The “Stay” and “Watch Me” Commands?

At Sunka K9 Training we believe that using the “Stay” command is unnecessary.  We believe that it is easier for the dog to learn that “Down” or “Sit” means to stay until the next command it given.

We find that once the communication path is established with your dog, he will be looking at you as a leader, thus watching you for guidance through this world that is confusing to him.

Does The E-Collar Shock My Dog?

No.  The E-Collars we use send gentle stimulation, similar to leash pressure to your dog.  Once your dog understands the communication of the leash, we transfer the leash pressure to E-Collar pressure.  This is great for training off-leash wether inside or out.
